How to Train in a Busy Gym
A busy commercial gym is a queue, not a reason to wander. Write the session before you arrive, including what you will do if the rack is taken.

Peak time in a commercial gym is when people finish work. Racks, benches, and the popular machines have a queue. The session still has a job. The job is the main exercise, done well enough to repeat, not a tour of whatever happens to be free.
Paradox Fitness coaches in person at The Gym Group White City. This article is about training in a busy gym of that kind. It is not a guide from the gym, and it does not describe a typical result of training there.
Write the card before you leave home
Three to five exercises is enough. Put the main one first. If you are new, your first four weeks in the gym is the month for learning that card, not for adding to it because the floor looks exciting.
Under the main exercise, write one substitute that trains a similar pattern.
- Squat or leg press, if the rack is taken: a split squat, a goblet squat, or a leg press if that one is free.
- Bench or dumbbell press: the other of those two, or a machine press.
- A row: a seated row, a chest-supported row, or a band row if that is all you can reach.
- A pulldown: a pull-up, or a one-arm pulldown if the seat is taken.
You choose the substitute when you can see the room. You do not invent it after twenty minutes of walking.
A short session is an advantage when the gym is full. Training twice a week with a short day still covers a leg pattern, a press, and a pull. The week builder will drop the extra exercises if you tell it the session has to stay short.
How to start without owning three stations
The warm-up is practice for the first exercise. It is not a circuit that needs a mat, a band, a treadmill, and then the rack. Use the warm-up builder so the first sets are lighter versions of the thing you are about to lift.
If someone is resting on the equipment you need, ask whether you can work in, and accept the answer. Work in means you take a set while they rest, then you leave the seat as you found it. It is not a claim on the machine for the rest of the hour.
Do not save a bench with a towel and then go and do three other exercises. Do the work, re-rack the plates, and move.
When to change the session
Change the exercise when the one you wrote down is taken and the queue is longer than your session can spare. Do not change the exercise because a busier part of the gym looks more serious.
Skip the last exercise if you are out of time. Do not skip the main one to keep an arm exercise you like. If the whole plan needed equipment you cannot get, do the substitutes, write what you actually did, and leave. The session review can still pass that visit. A passed session is one you could repeat, not one that matched the card in every line.
Headphones, a bag on the floor where people walk, and filming other people are how a busy room gets worse. Put the bag somewhere it is not a step, and point a camera at your own set if you are recording for your notes. Other people's sessions are not your content.
The check
You can pass this when a busy visit still looks like this:
- You arrived with a short list and one substitute for the main exercise.
- You did that main pattern, or the substitute, before you did anything optional.
- You left the equipment usable for the next person.
- You can say what you skipped, and why it was the extra work rather than the main work.
Personal training in West London is the in-person route at White City, including sessions in that gym. A coach in the room is for the days you want someone else to make the substitute call with you. The card above is what you can do on your own.
